Editor-in-Chief/Publisher: Miriam E. Pipes, a retired public schools' psychologist, has been affiliated with the National Funeral Directors & Morticians' Association for over twenty-five (25) years - beginning as a consultant for the 46th, 1983 NFD & MA national convention, held in Detroit, Michigan, hosted by the Michigan Selected Morticians', Inc.
SHUGAR'S SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS
Shugar's Publishing/The Purple Directory, at the 2001, 64th Annual Convention of NFD & MA, in New Orleans, LA and at the 2003, 66th Annual Convention of NFD & MA in Birmingham, AL, presented, at each convention, a total of $1,500.00 to: NFD & MA, 100 Black Women in Funeral Service and The Birdies for scholarship. The scholarships are in memory of: Mrs. Julia Keene Pipes, Mrs. Julia Pipes Offett, Mr. James Irvin Pipes and Mr. Leon Pipes.
The 2001 recipient of the Mrs. Julia Keene Pipes' scholarship is Mrs. Debra Sanders, a mortuary science student at East Mississippi Community College, Scooba, Mississippi. This was presented by the 100 Black Women in Funeral Service.
The 2003 recipient of the Mrs. Julia Keene Pipes' scholarship is Mrs. Louise Rice, a 3.5 mortuary science student enrolled at Piedmont Technical College, Greenwood, SC. This scholarship, too, was presented by the 100 Black Women in Funeral Service.
In Nashville, TN, at the 2005, 68th, NFD & MA Convention, One Hundred Black Women of Funeral Service and Epsilon Nu Delta Mortuary Fraternity awarded Shugar's scholarships in memory of Pipes' Family Members to Shelly O. Benson, Chicago, IL and Stacie Martin, Baltimore, MD, respectively.
The 2007 Pipes Memorial Scholarship recipient is Charles A. Spates, a mortuary science student at Miami Dade Community College, Miami, FL; awarded, at the 70th NFD & MA Convention, Philadelphia, PA, by NFD & MA's National Funeral Directors Mortuary Scholarship Foundation. This foundation is a 501 (c) (3) organization, which, to date, has disbursed over $60,000.00 to mortuary science students.
The 2009 Shugar's scholarship was awarded to Tyrone D. Burley, a mortuary science scholarship student at Wayne State University, Detroit, MI; the 2011 recipient is Kenyatta King, who plans to matriculate at the Piedmont Technical College, Greenwood, SC, majoring in mortuary science.
